The European Banking Authority published an opinion on the elements of strong customer authentication (SCA) under the second Payment Services Directive 2015/2366 (PSD2), which is to regulate payment services and payment service providers throughout the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA).  3D Secure 2 (3DS2) satisfies the SCA requirement under the PSD2.  The steps to take advantage of this technology, which offers reduced fraud rates, increased acceptance rates and overall increased confidence in ecommerce, depends on your checkout implementation as follows.

Adopting 3DS2 in Production 2021:

  • We’ve enabled 3DS 2.1 in production for all Envoy clients. Envoy clients will continue to inherit all changes related to this release. Please review our updated documentation to understand the benefits this enablement would have on your international customers and business outlook: here.
  • Checkout API v2 clients will continue to update the implementation In production exactly as in sandbox. Please refer to this page for more: https://docs.borderfree.com/x/ogWwAw

Adopting 3DS2 in Sandbox 2020:

  • If you are integrated into our Envoy checkout solution, there was no work required on your part.
  • If you are integrated into our Checkout API 2 solution, update your implementation to comply with the PSD2 and support Strong Customer Authentication for your international customers.  Please read the documentation that contains the implementation details necessary for staying in compliance with the Payment Services Directive (“PSD2”). Additionally, you can learn more about switching your implementation to Envoy to avoid technical work like this, along with other benefits, here.
